Spectacular and magnificent large bronze medallic plaque celebrating Lindbergh's famous first flight across the Atlantic in 1927. Made by sculptor and painter Julius T. Gutzwa of Meridian, Connecticut. Gutzwa (c1891-1956) was a Polish immigrant who came to the US at the age of 15. His artistic talents soon came to the forefront, and he became known as a painter and sculptor. His most famous work was a large bronze statue of Polish General and Patriot Pulaski, completed in 1934. His murals are found in Hartford, Meridian and elsewhere in Ct. In 1933, Gutzwa was commissioned to paint a number of present and historical world figures, including Woodrow Wilson and George Washington. Even though Gutzwa was an exceptionally successful and well paid artist, his name does not appear among the many standard art reference works. Noted medallic historian Dick Johnson. long time curator of the Medallic Arts Co., noted one known Lindbergh (note 2 different spellings) bronze plaque, which does not appear to be this piece. Johnson assigned a construction date of 1932, though we found no records on the web. Thus at present, there are two of these magnificent plaques known. 9 7/8" octagonal, two holes in upper panel for suspension. A third hole was considered and partially drilled at top center. This is an exceptional piece in XF-AU condition.
