"H.C. Heidtmann Reno, Nevada, Fredericksburg and Wieland Beers" tray, c1890s-1910s. Oval, 16" x 12.5". Original painting of a beautiful woman, gold painted borders and wording. Titled "Adeline," copyright "American Art-Works, Coshocton, O - 137." Some crackling, and rubbed areas, fading. A few of what appears to be paint drops lower left. Very nice piece and highly collectible. The Fredericksburg Brewery was founded in 1869 in San Jose, Calif. Prior to 1890 the bottling shop had to be distinct from the brewery. Beer destined for other west coast markets was sent in kegs to local agents who distributed the beer that they bottled, or had bottled by a separate plant. After 1890, the practice of using a bottler continued, since the bottlers were also distributors and the breweries didn't have to bear the expense of adding bottling works and finding other distribution agents. H. C. Heidtmann, prominent businessman in Reno, Nev., whose name is on the tray, became an agent for a SF brewery in 1909, according to his obituary. In 1890, controlling interest in the Fredericksburg Brewery was purchased by San Francisco Breweries, Ltd. This British syndicate was formed to acquire and amalgamate ten breweries in and around San Francisco. The John Wieland Brewery, also on the tray, was one of those breweries. The Fredericksburg Brewery didn't quite make it to Prohibition in 1920 after San Jose voted to become "dry" in 1918. More info: brewerygems.com. [ Reno Nevada beer
