This cut square is of Hiram Rhodes Revels signed "H. R. Revels/ Mississippi". Hiram Rhodes Revels was born a free man in 1827 in North Carolina. He was of voting age at the time of the Civil War and living in Ohio. A Republican politician- the first Black Senator from Mississippi, a minister, and a college administrator. Southern Democrats opposed him and referenced the 1857 Dred Scott Decision (by the U.S. Supreme Court), which stated that people of Black ancestry could not be citizens; therefore he was unqualified to be a Senator because it was required that the candidate have nine years of citizenship which he did not possess before the 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868. His fellow Republican senators came to his aide and overruled this argument because he was a voting citizen in Ohio first. A fellow supporter made note that his opponents were still fighting in that last field of the Civil War. Revels believed in moderation and compromise. The year was 1870. 1 in.
