HK 1, the first in a long series of So-Called Dollars, a term coined more than 100 years ago for commemorative coins minted to celebrate a special date, occasion, celebration or exposition. HK1 is the Erie Canal piece of 1826. This piece had silver plating over babbitt. Only a portion of the original plating is present on the obverse, and the reverse is pitted, difficult to read. Its a good example to start a collection, difficult to find today. Hibler-Kappan states "white metal", but this piece appears to be silver plated babbitt, a tin-lead, etc alloy, aka "white metal".
