Morgan Bulkeley signed check, dated March 4, 1911 and written on the Kings National Bank in Washington D.C.
Morgan Gardner Bulkeley (1837 - 1922) was a Civil War veteran, mayor of Hartford, Connecticut, governor of Connecticut, and a United States Senator who also served as the first president of the National League. In 1874, during the early days of professional baseball, Bulkeley established the Hartford Dark Blues of the National Association of Professional Baseball Players. When the National League replaced that organization in 1876, Bulkeley was selected to lead the new group. In his only season as president, he targeted illegal gambling, drinking and fan rowdiness. Bulkeley tenure as a National Pastime executive was short-lived, but significant enough to earn election to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937. Hartford Connecticut
