A collection of about 150 pieces of railroad correspondence history, including waybills, receipts, ledgers, letters, etc., from the Hartford, Providence & Fishkill Railroad. Includes an 1875 invoice for $8.00 for "Services moving passengers & baggage from Wreck to Waterbury. Self & two horse team from 2 p.m. till 8 or 9 P.M." "Real risk in driving & hard on horses owing to condition of roads. One horse lamed but in hope - thinks he will soon be over it." This appears to be from the April 20, 1875 train wreck in Thomaston, Conn., during a flood in which the track was washed out by a landslide, the train thrown from the track, the engine tender car was destroyed but the passenger car remained upright and unharmed.
The Hartford, Providence & Fishkill Railroad was one of the earliest branch lines on the east coast, connecting Hartford to Providence, (and later Fishkill New York), planned in 1833 by a group of Hartford Connecticut businessmen, and chartered in 1847.
