Choice old Haida Raven rattle, 6" x 18.5" x 3", carved, painted (worn) wood, twine wrapped handle. This is a classic Raven rattle, possibly in the style of Charles Edenshaw (1839-1920), nephew of Albert Edward Edenshaw, one of the earliest known carvers of Raven rattles. The oldest known is reportedly from 1804. Charles Edenshaw was a major artist, carver, sculptor of all things Haida. He regularly sold to collectors, and many of his pieces are in all of the great museums today. Edinshaw came from lineage of the Raven "moiety" (people.)The rattle has significant wear on the paint surfaces. It has been in the same family collection for decades, but it's ultimate provenance is unknown, as are many or most Pacific Northwest older antiquities, particularly those purchased by gold seekers of the Nome and Alaska/Yukon Gold Rush, circa 1898-1910. Comments have been received that this item is not authentic, contrary to the consignors information.
