"No. 6 HALE & NORCROSS MINE VA CITY NEV" written in white text on the photo. No photographer listed. 4.75 x 7.75" photo on 7.5 x 10.5" board. Stains, tear in bottom left corner. Good contrast and sharp focus. The Hale & Norcross Mine was staked in 1859 and located between the Savage and Chollar Mines. In the early 1860s, a 3 compartment shaft was sunk to explore the property at greater depths. In 1868, William Sharon controversially elected a board of directors, but the mine wasn't successful that year. James G. Fair saw an opportunity, and convinced John Mackay and James Flood that the property was a worthy one to pursue. They secretly bought up shares and wrestled control of the mine away from Sharon and the Bank of California in 1869. This was the first large move by the Bonanza Firm; they would go on to make millions with the Bid Bonanza discovery in 1873. Flood became president and Fair was elected superintendent, and the mine prospered under their management. In the 1870s, the Hale & Norcross joined forces with the Chollar-Potosi and Savage mines to sink the Combination Shaft which reached over 3,000 ft. in depth.
