Classic Nevada autograph. Certificate No. 2397, issued for 1,000 shares to Norman P. Ellis, the company secretary, on Oct. 9, 1922. Signed by F.M. Smith as president and Ellis as acting secretary. Not cancelled. Brown border and fancy logo. Creases and some tape-repaired tears on the top. 8.5' x 10.5" Francis Marion Smith (aka. "Borax" Smith) was known for establishing the first successful borax mining operation in 1872 at Teel's Marsh, Nevada. Helping to start the borax rush in the Nevada desert in the late 19th Century, Smith founded the Pacific Coast Borax Company, which later became U.S. Borax. (Ref: scvhistory.com). After making his fortune mining borax in Death Valley, he moved to Oakland, California and built the Key System of red cars that brought mass transit to the Bay Area.
