Lot of 2. Tonopah Mining District, Incorporated under the laws of Utah in September 1902. Certificate no. 1966 issued to Thomas S. Robinson for 500 shares on 4 November 1915. Certificate no. 2228 issued to Fred D. Black for 500 shares on 11 December 1918. Signed by F.M. Smith, president, and F.J. Westcott, secretary. No vignette, ornate brown border with black print and embossed seal at lower left. Both U/C, signed and dated by Robinson, Black on reverse. "Mines at Tonopah, Nevada" printed on certificate. Printer: R.M.B.N. Co. F.M. Smith, also known as "Borax" Smith was known for establishing the first successful borax mining operation in 1872 at Teel`s Marsh, Nevada. Helping to start the borax rush in the Nevada desert in the late 19th Century, Smith founded the Pacific Coast Borax Company, which later became U.S. Borax [Ref: scvhistory.com]. West End Consolidated Co. was in charge of development work, receiving treasury stock in payment. Production was about 200 tons/week to the West End Smelter. Adjoins the central portion of the Belmont property on the east, with a long crosscut made to connect with the Buckeye-Belmont workings [Ref: Mines Handbook, Weed, Vol. XIII, 1918, p. 1159]. Both pieces have fold lines, several tears, and pinholes. Cert. No. 1966 has a 1/2" tear in upper left border while 2228 has a hole and tear in seal.
