"Borax" Smith (1846-1931) was a highly successful mining magnate in the Mojave Desert and Death Valley, mining borax in Nevada in the early 1870s with his brother before acquiring claims in Death Valley in the 1880s. By 1890, he consolidated operations and formed the Pacific Coast Borax Company. In addition to his multiple mining operations in California and Nevada, Smith also founded the Tonopah & Tidewater Railroad and the Key System in the San Francisco Bay Area.
