Incorporated in Colorado. Dateline Hancock, Colo. Certificate number 84, issued in 1881 to J. W. Gannett, Trustee. Signed by president J. A. Evans and secretary S. E. Land. Not cancelled. Black print on blue paper. Vignette of eagle, prospectors, and the Colorado state seal. 3.75 x 8.5" Hancock is a ghost town! The town was established in 1880 in Chaffee County, Colorado, during construction of the Alpine Tunnel. Located 5 miles south of Saint Elmo. By 1881, there were multiple stores, saloons, restaurants, a wood frame train depot, telegraph office and all types of shacks and cabins. The tunnel ceased operation in 1910 and the last mine in Hancock closed in 1926.
