Spectacular hand drawn multi-color ink on linen map of Mercur by an unknown mining engineer. It appears to have been designed for public display, as there is no normal title block at lower right, rather a fancy black-on-white "map of Mercur Utah". At the bottom center are detailed ink drawings of "vertical section of Golden Gate at left; "sketch of Mercur looking north-east; "Ideal section of Mercur Valley restored". The map measures 6'3" long by 40" wide. The map shows much detail of the Mercur District: surveyed claim boundaries; railroad route; roads; underground workings of the De La Mar and Mercur mines; topography. Mercur was a deposit located from an early placer gold discovery. The district was organized in 1870, and the town of Lewiston soon emerged. Ore grades and metallurgical difficulties caused a downfall in production and near-abandonment of the district. But in 1890, it got a renewed life after the involvement in cyanide processing, and the town of Mercur was built over the top of the dilapidated Lewiston. A railroad was completed to Mercur in 1892, and this map appears to date to that approximate period. Mercur is located two ranges west of Orem, Utah. Today, there is an open pit gold mine on the Mercur site. This map is a choice historical reference work, and may have been on display in the mine manager's office at the time.
