Meiji Era (1868-1912) Japanese Photograph Collection. 4 Albums and 3 small envelopes, over 165 original photographs, mostly large format. Hand coloring photographs was refined and widespread in Japan by the 1880s. Most early photos are monochrome albumen prints made from wet collodion or dry plate glass negatives. Color was added using water-soluble pigments, which were more transparent than the oil paints commonly used in the West. In the 1890s more vivid colors made from aniline dyes were in use. This collection represents a beautiful example of early hand-coloring with subtle, transparent, softer tones characteristic of the artistic appeal of original hand-tinted Japanese photographs. In the 1870s when Japan opened the door for Foreign trade and tourism, Western commercialism, technologies and imports hit the shores like a Tsunami. Over the next 50-100 the traditional Japanese lifestyle was rapidly replaced by Western standards and values, and centuries of Japanese Culture faded into history. This devastation coincided with the rise of photographic technology, and the late 1800s became a critical time period for the photographic preservation of Japan's cultural history. This collection is both an important photographic archive for Japan and Her People, but also an artistic work. COLLECTION CONTENTS: Album 1: Japan and Her People, Daily Life.
