The Oath of Office for J.N. Laurbert as Marshal of the United States for the Western District of Arkansas signed on the 12th of January 1886 by Judge Isaac C. Parker, known as The Hanging Judge. "I, J.N. Laurbert, do solemnly swear that I faithfully execute all lawful precepts, directed to the Marshal of the United States for the Western District of Arkansas, under the authority of the United States, and true returns make, and in all things well and truly, and without malice or partiality, perform the duties of Deputy Marshal of the Western District of Arkansas during my continuance in said office, and take only my lawful fees, so help me God." Signed "J.N. Laurbert." Parker and Judge Roy Bean are undoubtedly the two most famous judges of the Old West. During Parker's 21 years at Fort Smith more than 160 men were sentenced to death but through retrials, commutations etc., only about 79 were actually hanged. It was written that many thought Parker was more of a sadist than many of those he sentenced to death. Approximately 6" x 9" document with stamp on reverse, "Filed Jan. 12, 1886" with clerk's name.
