Half plate Daguerreotype image of thirteen (13) gold miners working at their gold claim in Hangtown (Later Placerville, earlier Dry Diggins) during the California Gold Rush. The claim may have belonged to Thomas & Martin Reinhart of Alvada, Ohio, according to family records. Besides the brothers, there are three Chinese miners on what appears to be a hired crew.
Visible in the photo is all the equipment needed to extract gold from either Weber or Hangtown Creek, including pans, a smaller sluice box and a larger "Long Tom" sluice.
The leather photo case measures 4.34"x 6", while the photo alone measures 4.5"x 5.5". The picture is EXTREMELY clear and like several state highway crews of today, there are a few of the gang resting on their shovels.
This is one of the very few choice condition and content Dags in private hands. It represents the hundreds of early Gold Rush "companies" created and consisting of family and friends from the "East" that came west, pooling their resources to form a mining group or company and seek their fortune. Most of these groups broke up fairly early in the game, as the work was tremendously hard and physically demanding, day after day. This rare view comes with family provenance, another important facet in identifying Gold Rush history.
