44504. Consigner Larry Smith Redding California. Hard to Beat whiskey bottle. Clear, applied top, flint glass, Classic California pictorial whiskey. The Hard To Beat whiskey brand was used by the Lowe Brothers, wholesale liquor merchants in San Francisco. Their firm was established in 1861 and lasted for decades, well into the 20th century. This bottle has a classic applied top very similar to the Siebe Brothers bottle. Author John Thomas listed the date of these bottles as circa 1890. It certainly would appear that they would date from the mid-1880s because of the use of flint glass. Manganese based glass became prevalent after 1890 and we haven't seen enough comparative analogy among some of the clear whiskey bottle manufacturers to truly understand the dating. This applied top version was not known at the time of Thomas' first addition and is found in the later 2002 addition. That year, it was stated that there were three of these bottles known. This bottle is very clean, has never been professionally worked, and is in the same condition as found. There are very minor light surface scratches and one exceptionally small surface abrasion. A professional bottle cleaner would have these removed with a buffing wheel in less than five minutes. This is a gem of an example of this rare picture whiskey.
