Location: Ethan Allen Ledge, Big Creek, Lander County, N. T. (printed to the right of vignette). Big Creek district. Large "Reese River" underprint. Inc. August 12, 1863. #32 issued for 10 shares to W. D. Messer on Sept. 8, 1863 in San Francisco. Signed by president G. R. Turner and secretary S. C. Gallagher. Not cancelled. Attractive certificate with ornate black border and print, two vignettes: bare-breasted allegorical woman (left) and eagle and shield (center). 25 cent adhesive revenue stamp. Folds, very clean. The Harding seemed to have had a short six month life. It was located on the west side of the central Toiyabe Range, 12 miles south of Austin. Big Creek adjoins the Reese River district to the north. Although organized as a silver mining district in 1863, it would be antimony in 1890 that would propel this district to financial success. The Ethan Allen Ledge produced a strata of chalky decayed quartz very rich in chloride of silver. It was recognized as the same formation and composition found in the silver mines in Mexico, and in the Ophir and Gould & Curry on the Comstock. A few notes on company, ledge, district and mining camp.
