Signed by president Frisk and secretary John F. Bremer. Not cancelled. Red, black and gold print with vignette of California state seal centered in a mining scene. Small vignette of dog next to safe at the bottom of the certificate. Printed by HS Crocker & Co., Sacramento. 25 cent IR stamp attached on the left side. Folds, chip on left and bottom borders. Small tears around the edges. 5 x 10.25" Not in Filer. Clarksville is located 14 miles west/ southwest of Placerville. The Mormon Tavern was established there in 1848/1849 during the California Gold Rush. A man named Clarkson set up a stopping place near the tavern. It became known as Clarkson's Village. It was located near the junction of the stagecoach road from Sacramento and the freight road east to the Sierra mines which brought people, news, supplies, and mail to the gold fields. The town soon became the commercial and social center for the area, and boasted of four hotels in its heyday. By 1855 a post office was established there, and in the process the postal authorities renamed the town Clarksville. () State: California City: El Dorado County Date: 1863
