The Harper's Weekly gives us an account of Lieutenant-Colonel Philip St. George Cooke of the 2nd Dragoons on June 12, 1858. Lieutenant Cooke of the U.S. Army, a graduate of West Point, fought in the Mexican War and the "Mormon Brigade" which took him to California and is noted for finding the route for the Transcontinental Railroad though the Sierras.
