January 2, 1935 began the trial of the accused kidnapper and murderer of Charles Lindbergh's baby boy. 700 reporters, thousands of spectators, celebrities like Walter Winchell, Damon Runyon and Jack Benny came. Hauptman was found guilty and electrocuted, maintaining his innocence to the end. Journalist H. L. Mencken called the trial of Richard Hauptmann, "the greatest story since the Resurrection."
