An eight page edition of "Temperance Advocate, and Seamen's Friend" from October 28, 1843. While the text is aimed at the temperance movement at that time, this particular edition is aimed at the whaling and merchant ship owners and companies that visit or the one's that call the various port towns hoe, to consider exercising temperance, for a variety of reasons. Financially, the paper points out, the British ship owners pay a higher premium to the underwriters because they allow their crews onboard spirits, while the Americans allow only coffee and tea and thus pay a lesser amount. There us also an article that advises sailors that they would advance quicker into the officer ranks if they were to abstain.
There is also a temperance pledge and an article titled "A Daughter's Lament."
While most of the articles are geared towards temperance, there are a few news items, including the announcement that England has colonized Hong Kong in accordance with a treaty with China.
This piece is in good and readable condition, considering its age, although there is some discoloration, which is to expected. A fascinating look back at Hawaiian history.
