Location of Works: Oakland, California (printed at upper right). No. 24, issued for 100 shares to Oscar Olofson on Jan. 10th, 1905 in San Francisco. Signed by president George E. Heaton and secretary William Sparling. Not cancelled. Green border, black print. Fancy logo in the clouds and B&W vignette of an airship. Printed by HS Crocker & Co., SF. 8.5 x 11.25" Heavy folds, some toning. George Heaton and his wife Georgia constructed the California Messenger, an airship dirigible 76 feet long, 24 feet in diameter, and with 10,000 cubic ft. of gas capacity. It was revealed to the public in March 1905 at Oakland's Idora Park. It had two successful flights at the Agricultural Park in San Jose in July 1905. [Ref: Quest for Flight, Harwood] A San Francisco Call, Feb. 19th, 1905 article entitled "WOMAN ADRIFT IN DISABLED AIRSHIP USES HAIRPIN TO PUNCTURE GAS BAG" describes Georgia Heaton's exciting flight and crash in the California Messenger when it became unmoored and she drifted over Berkeley for an hour, eventually using her teeth and a hairpin to puncture the gas bag and descend to safety.
