Two heavy gold rings recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck. One ring is size 8.75, weighs 14.8 grams (0.47 ozt), with engraving // C R // on two of the facets. The other ring is size 9, weighs 13.9 grams (0.44 ozt), with engraving // M M N // on three of the facets. These were found wrapped together in a strip of cotton cloth, which was wrapped in a piece of the front page of the New York Weekly News and National Democrat for Thursday, November 20, 1856 (still legible!), which was then stuffed into a leather poke. Both the cloth and the newspaper are included in the lot along with the two gold rings, but not the leather poke. No match has been found for the initials on the available passenger lists. Since the rings were stuffed in a leather poke, it is unlikely they were part of Samuel Shreve's product inventory. Electronically tested as 18K gold.

Provenance: SS Central America Collection
