Heishi (Olive) Shell Necklace Authentic Santa Domingo Indian Jewelry. About 16" long. This authentic, antique Native American piece is a beautiful example of shell work by the Santa Domingo Indians. Santo Domingo Pueblo people (also known as Kewa Pueblo) primarily use local materials like turquoise and spiny oyster, along with olive shell (heishi), for their traditional jewelry. Olive shells are used to make fine, hand-rolled beads, a technique known as heishi. Santo Domingo Pueblo, also known Kewa Pueblo is a federally recognized tribe of Pueblo people in northern New Mexico. This necklace has a steel wire closure, characteristic of pieces made from the mid-20th century to the 1970s and 1980s. This piece is mounted with a Wampum shell and incorrectly labelled as Wampum but it is a lovely example of Native American shell jewelry in a presentation display box/frame.
