Chief Henry Speck (1901 - 1971) is one of the great Pacific Northwest coast Native artists (Kwakwak'awkw), Speck was a master carver and knowledgeable traditionalist, who is remembered for his unique approach to painting. He was very active in traditional feast system & his work has influenced generations of Northwest Native artists. Henry Speck was a Kwakwaka’wakw hereditary chief and artist who died in 1971. He was born in the village of Kalugawis on Turnour Island off the northeast coast of Vancouver Island. He was known for his dancing & singing & for traditional Kwakwak’wakw works such as totem poles and house-posts. His hereditary name was Udzi’stalis (pronounced oodgee staalis).
