Lot of over 50 papers. "Esmeralda Has Yielded Up Her Millions And Has Billions Left For Honest Toil" printed below masthead, datelined "Aurora, Esmeralda County, Nev." Issues run between 5 and 40 pages. Measures 14" x 21". The Herald started as a weekly by Frank Kenyon at Aurora, in October, 1877, and continued as his property until March 1, 1880. It was purchased by M. M. Glen, and run by Glenn Brothers [Ref: twainquotes.com/Esmeralda]. These pieces contain numerous advertisements, railroad timetables, and articles on mining, politics, and state and county tax lists. Aurora was a mining camp born in the early 1860's following E.R. Hicks, J.M. Corey, and James Barley's discovery of a rich quartz vein on Mt. Corey. Because of its proximity to the CA/NV line, the city was originally the county seat for both Mono (CA) and Esmeralda (NV) Counties. After a survey placed the city in NV, Mono moved its county seat to Bodie. The mining district collapsed in 1864, and was briefly revived from 1884-1886 and again from 1906-1918 [Ref: Carlson, 1974, p. 43]. Edges are flaking, and paper is yellowing. Left and right side of the paper has tears that have resulted in pieces detached from the paper. Most pages have been separated. Still a lot of historical research in these papers that you won't find in history books!City: AuroraCounty: Esmeralda CountyState: NVDate:
