Gold Rush-era Amador County! No. 50, issued for one share to WP Jones on April 2nd, 1855 in Herbertville. Signed by the president (illegible) and Samuel Davis (secretary). Not cancelled. Printed on delicate blue paper with no vignette. Reverse has notations for transfers of shares. Measures 5.25" x 8." Folds and small stains. The city of Herbertville began in 1851 and was named after reverend Lemuel Herbert, who was an owner of Spring Hill Mine. It is now a ghost town. According to the Sacramento Daily Union, March 8th, 1859, the Herbertville Quartz Mining Co. took out $4,750 in the month of February, a "good beginning." On July 1st of the same year, the same newspaper reported a yield of $6,500 from their operation on Sutter Creek. Ken Prag Collection
