Gorgeously framed (21 x 20 inches) poster advertising the first Masquerade Ball of the California Lodge No. 2 of the order of the Hermann's Sons, Saturday evening, December 6, 1884, at Germania Hall, Oakland. Tickets were 50 cents. A German-American mutual aid society, the Sons of Hermann was founded in New York City in 1840 and remains active today.
Hundreds of lodges were organized during the nineteenth century; by 1895 there were about 30,000 members, and in 1896 there were Grand Lodges in California, Connecticut, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington in addition to New York, as well as scattered members in 15 other states with a total membership of 90,000.
