Location: San Francisco County. Very rare! One of few mines from this location and a reminder of the early mining efforts attempted near San Francisco. No. 17, issued for 10 shares to William H. Green on July 6th, 1863 in San Francisco. Signed by HH Byron(?) as president and Hugo Dreschfeld as secretary. (Dreschfeld was also the secretary of the Adriatic G&S MC in the Flowery District, Storey County, NV in 1865). Not cancelled. Vignette of miner with pick and shovel (center) and profile of Lady Liberty (at left). Printed by Valentine & Co. 25c adhesive revenue stamp attached bottom left. 5.25 x 10" Missing lower right corner, otherwise very fine. Information about this company is very difficult to find. No reference to the district is made in J Ross Browne 1865. Irelan 1888 describes the county as follows: "...little can be said about her mineral resources...A number of small auriferous veins have been found in the county, the most of them located in the vicinity of the city. The ore thus far obtained from these veins has been scanty and of low grade. None of them has been developed to a paying point...On the ocean beach gold-bearing black sand occurs in considerable quantity. Attempts have also been made to work these deposits; but these efforts proved so remunerative that they were soon given up." Dreschfeld is listed in the 1863 and 1864 San Francisco directories as "secretary mining companies office 24 & 26 Naglee's building." No company is listed.
