The Hishikari Gold Mine near the southern tip of Japan is a world-class gold deposit with an average grade of 40 grams per ton. In 2008 it was the only operating gold mine in that country. This long slab, approx. 6 x 2 x 1 inches, and weighing ~249 grams, shows the characteristic banded nature of the ore body with the high-grade material concentrated in the dark wavy features across the specimen. The marked label says the sample is from the Hosen 5 Vein of the East Drive on the 55 M Level, W6B.
