The Hishikari Gold Mine near the southern tip of Japan is a world-class gold deposit with an average grade of 40 grams per ton. In 2008 it was the only operating gold mine in that country. This sawn sample, approx. 5-1/2 x 2-1/4 x 1-3/4 inches thick, and weighing ~464.6 grams, shows the characteristic banded nature of the ore body with the high-grade material concentrated in the dark wavy feature across the center and along the edge of the specimen. Handwritten label says it comes from the Yamada Vein that ran 4000 grams Au. It is a nice display piece for desk or bookshelf.
