The Hishikari Gold Mine near the southern tip of Japan is a world-class gold deposit with an average grade of 40 grams per ton. In 2008 it was the only operating gold mine in that country. This sawn specimen, approx. 3.25 x 2.5 x 1.25 inches, and weighing ~220.6 grams, shows the characteristic banded nature of the ore body with the high-grade material concentrated in the dark wavy feature near the edge of the specimen. The handwritten label dated 1991 indicates this piece came from the 100-meter level, Ryosen No. 5W Vein.
