The Hishikari Gold Mine near the southern tip of Japan is a world-class gold deposit with an average grade of 40 grams per ton. In 2008 it was the only operating gold mine in that country. This slab, approx. 3-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches across, 0.4 inches thick, and weighing ~140.5 grams, shows the characteristic banded nature of the ore body with the high-grade material concentrated in the dark wavy feature near the edge of the specimen. The attached label from 1989 indicates 254.6 ounces per ton gold, and 1,835.8 ounces per ton silver. This is a spectacular piece for anyone collecting high-grade gold specimens from around the world.
