High-grade silver ore from the Illinois Mine, near the site of Lodi, north of Gabbs, Nye County, Nevada, approx 90 x 90 x 90 mm. A mass of white quartz studded with clusters of silvery-grey mineralization, probably argentite (silver sulfide), with black spots of pyrolusite (manganese oxide). The Illinois Mine is part of a cluster of mining operations that date back to the mid 1800s. Some structures remain, including foundations of a mill and a wooden headframe. The remoteness of the site lead to the closure of the operations in the early 1900s, but some sources indicate that significant mineral resources remain for future development.
