High-grade silver ore from the infamous Belmont Mine in Tonopah, Nye County, Nevada, approximately 50 x 50 x 30 mm. Massive white quartz with what appears to be a thick layer and scattered blobs of argentite -- a silver sulfide, on multiple surfaces. The Belmont Mine is famous for a deadly fire in 1911 that killed 17 underground miners. William F. "Big Bill" Murphy became remembered as the Hero of the Belmont Mine Fire for rescuing numerous miners on two trips into the burning mine. His third trip to rescue more overcame him. A memorial to Big Bill was dedicated in 2006 to commemorate his heroism.
