Large, high-grade silver ore specimen from the Mizpah Vein, Mizpah Mine, Tonopah, Nye County, Nevada, approx 160 x 65 x 40 mm. Massive quartzite with thick, dark bands of silvery-gray mineralization throughout along with easily visible pyrite and possibly chalcopyrite on the exposed surfaces. In 1900, a central Nevada prospector by the name of Jim Butler went looking for a wayward burro, so the story goes, and came upon the second largest silver strike in Nevada history. Silver and gold production took off almost immediately and the town of Butler began to grow quickly. By 1905 the name had changed to Tonopah. Mining continued in earnest, only to diminish to practically nothing during the Great Depression. This large specimen will look good on a desk or bookshelf to commemorate a colorful mining history of this famous Nevada mining district.
