4" drugstore bottle, Hinchman & Alward druggists Virginia City, Montana. Penn oval. No makers Mark on base. Clear with minor stain, no apparent chips. Hinchman was born in 1846 in Indiana. While serving in the Civil War, he was captured by Confederate forces and held until 1865, when a deal was made for his release. After the Civil War he went to Mound City Missouri where ran a drugstore from about 1871 to 1877. In 1877 Hinchman moved to Virginia City, Montana, the booming mining metropolis in the Montana mountains. From 1877 to 1883 Hinchman ran a drugstore there with his partner Alward. In 1883 he moved to the larger and more successful long-term town of Bozeman. Reference M. A. Leeson, 1885, "History of Montana".
