This poster features a black and white image of a photograph made by Lunar Orbiter 1 on August 23, 1966, which shows the sunlit portion of the earth rising above the lunar horizon. A smaller, accompanying poster shows the orbital geometry of the earth, moon, and the spacecraft when the image was captured. This image pre-dates the 1968 color image of earth from the moon taken by Apollo 8 astronauts. Eastman Kodak built the 150-pound camera with two lenses (wide and narrow field) that captured and developed images on black and white photographic film, then scanned the images and sent them back to earth in digital form. NASA engineers were not allowed to examine the camera when it was installed in the Lunar Orbiter, because it had been originally designed for the Samos spy satellites of that same time period. Main poster is 45.5 x 20.5 inches. Smaller poster is 15 x 17 inches. Both are in good condition.
