The first title reads, "Universal History: or, An Historical View of Asia, Africa, Europe, and America, from their earliest records to the nineteenth century: with a particular reference to the State of Society, Literature, Religion, and form of Government, in The United States of America, by David Ramsay, M.D., 'Life is so short, and time so valuable, that it were happy for us, if all great works were reduced to their quintessence.' Sir William Jones. In Twelve Volumes. Volume I, America-The United States. Philadelphia: Published by M. Carey and Son, for the sole benefit of the heirs of the author. T.C. Fay, Agent for the distribution of the work. 1818." Over 200 year old book is intact, with only some scuffs on cover edges, upper and lower spine and lower corner wear, and foxing.
