In January 1887 the Nevada Legislature created "The Indian School Commission" for the purpose of establishing an Indian school in Ormsby County. It also authorized the county to issue $10,000 in 6% bonds to cover the cost. The three-member Commission consisted H. M. Yerington, Governor Jewett W. Adams, and local physician Dr. Simeon Lee. Yerington was the vice president of the V&T Railroad and a prominent Nevadan. He was appointed the commission chair. The Commission purchased the 200-acre Henry Ross Ranch three miles south of Carson City on Clear Creek and conveyed it to the United States Government. Ultimately the U. S. Bureau of Indian Affairs selected an alternate site where the Carson Indian School was established in 1890. It was renamed Stewart Indian School in 1905 after Nevada United States Senator William Morris Stewart, who was instrumental in the school's early support.

Includes minutes of commission meetings, 1887-1889; 6 original signed letters to Yerington from the U. S. Commissioner of Indian Affairs in Washington D. C. 1887-1897; 7 letters and telegrams; one incomplete letter from Senator Stewart; and a December 1897 Ormsby County resolution of appreciation to Yerington for his work in establishing the school. Also pieces signed by locals C. K. Young, George F. Ford, W. M. Cook(?), legislative bills, telegrams, notes, etc.

This is a historically important collection on the establishment of the Carson Indian School in 1890 which ultimately became the Stewart Indian School at Stewart, Nevada in 1905. The school closed in 1980 and the many masonry buildings on-site are now managed by the state.
