Hardcover, 704 pages. "History of the United States Secret Service" by General L. C. Baker, Chief National Detective Police. Published by L. C. Baker, 1867. A secret history of the civil war: "an exposure of the manifold and the gigantic frauds and crimes of both the openly disloyal and the professed friends of the Republic." Including the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the capture of his assassins. Very good condition. Baker was fired as government spymaster by President Johnson, and published this book in response. Baker announced he had John Wilkes Booth's diary, which was being suppressed by Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War. When the diary was produced, 18 pages were missing, leading to conspiracy theories about Lincoln's demise. On July 3, 1868 Baker died, reportedly from meningitis, but could he have been poisoned?
