A set of 3 hardback books which hold all of Volumes 1-6 of Holden's Dollar Magazine, published 1848-50 by Wm. H. Dietz, N.Y. Vols. I and II are within the first book, with 384 pp., published in 1848; Vols. III and IV are in the second book, with 768 pp., published in 1849; Vols. V and VI are in the third book, with 764 pp., published in 1850. Book 3 is the only one with the editor listed as Charles F. Briggs. The books contain a multitude of interesting "criticisms, biographies, sketches, essays, tales, reviews, poetry, etc.," some illustrated. Vol. III features a Genessee Falls frontispiece, and Gold in California on p. 193, with illustration. Vol. I features "An Adventure of Kit Carson; A Tale of the Sacramento," p. 209, and "Crossing the Desert" on p. 223. Vol. VI has a frontispiece of Astoria, Oregon, which is also the subject of the lead article. On p. 401 is a story on the history of printing titled, "The Bibliophilist." There is degradation to the binding of both books 1 and 3, and all books have been rebound, although book 2's rebinding was more recent. All have foxing and age-related wear, but are still very readable. Other individual condition as follows: Book 1 - spine wear, front hinge detaching, tear lower flyleaf page, no title page, missing lower corner p. 3 (doesn't affect text); Book 2 - light staining lower right first 90 pages and bottom of last 30 pages. Book 3 - penned writing inside cover page, book binder's small adhesive label inside cover, ownership inscription on title page. Holden's Dollar Magazine began in 1848, and ran until 1851. Besides Vols. 1-6 in these 3 books, there are two more volumes, Vols. 7-8. In 1851, the magazine merged with the North American Miscellany to form The North American Miscellany and Dollar Magazine. [
