A framed cover going to Salt Lake City. Also a blank check from the Office of Holladay. In 1862, Ben Holladay purchased the bankrupt Overland Mail Company for $700,000 and renamed it the “Holladay Overland Mail & Express Company. The company, which provided passenger service by stagecoach, also delivered mail from St. Louis, Missouri to Placerville, California. Part of the route came through Colorado and went west from Julesburg to Fort Laramie in Wyoming. Benjamin "Ben" Holladay (1819 – 1887) was an American transportation businessman responsible for creating the Overland Stage to California during the height of the 1849 California Gold Rush. Ben Holladay created a stagecoach empire and is known in history as the "Stagecoach King".
