Obverse: standing male figure of early Dutch settler flanked by two female figures holding shields; above is winged putto in glory, emerging from cloud and holding man's hat; legend: "PRESENTED BY THE HOLLAND SOCIETY OF NEW YORK JANUARY 18TH 1906." Reverse: shield containing seal of the Netherlands, surmounted by crown, held by arm extended from cloud above; inscription below: "Aande Staaten van Friesland/ter dankbaare nagedachtenisse/van de Landsdagen in Febr. en Apr./MDCCLXXXII/Toegewyd/dood de Burger Societeit/door Vryheid en Yver/te Leeuwarden."; surrounding legend: "MEDAL STRUCK TO COMMEMORATE THE RECOGNITION OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE BY THE PROVINCE OF FRIESLAND 1782."

The Holland Society of New York is composed of direct descendants in the male line of first Dutch settlers who lived in American colonies under Dutch rule before or during 1675. Founded in 1885 as a fraternal organization, the Holland Society has grown into a nation-wide membership with its headquarters and library in New York City. The Holland Society collects books and records pertaining to the lives of Dutch families who settled in the Dutch colonial territory before 1675.
