A stock certificate for 19.260 shares in the Homer Mill & Mining Company, made out in 1883 to F.E. Luty, the secretary of the company. No. 756 issued. Signed by Luty himself as well as the company's vice president. Great condition, some toning, minor wear/staining at edges. The lot also contains an 1888 report on the minerals of Mono County by H.A. Whiting; good condition, 49 pages, contains a fold-out map of a Bodie mine.
Located about 2 miles from the May Lundy mine near Lundy Lake, the Homer was the largest mine in the Homer district, with a tunnel that reached 700 feet. It produced about $650,000 in gold through 1881, according to Burchard. The district is near Lundy, about 22 miles southwest of Bodie, and was first discovered in August of 1879 by prospector L. L. Homer. The first discoveries in the district were in Mill Canyon, 1.5 miles from Lundy. J. G. McClinton, of Bodie, bought the first discovered ledge from Homer and incorporated the mining company with Martin Jones as superintendent. Several other companies were incorporated about the same time, including the May Lundy as well as Homer Land, Water, Mining, & Mill Company. (Burchard, 1880.) The mineral report included with the stock discusses the geology and mining developments of the Homer District.
