Hopalong Cassity is a fictional Western American cowboy character created in 1904 by the author Clarence E. Mulford, who originally portrayed the cowboy as rude and coarse, with a wooden leg that gave a little "hop" to his normal walking gait. From 1935 to 1952, the character was adapted to the silver screen starring William Boyd, who transformed Hopalong into a clean-cut Western hero figure. Boyd starred as Hoppalong Cassidy in sixty-six films that were only loosely based on the stories by Mulford. Boyd was particularly interested in young people, frequently refusing to license his name and image for anything he considered ill-suited for youth, and he would decline personal appearances at any venue where his "friends" would have to pay an admission fee. It is William Boyd's characterization of Hopalong Cassidy that is memorialized on this 9-3/8-inch plate with the words, "To My Friend - Hoppy" in the lower left. The plate is in "like new" condition and comes with a spring-tensioned, brass plate hanger for display. State: City: Date:
