This was THE guide to take with you in 1852 travelling across the United States on the newly built transcontinental railroad. First edition as identified by the lack of newspaper notices on page 5 and the Council Bluffs Agency Ferry ad is on page 68. By Hosea B. Horn. Published by J. H. Colton. Presented to Dr. J.V.C. Smith who was the fifth Port Physician in Boston. In 1852, he ran for and was elected mayor of Boston. This is the 1852 edition of Horn’s overland guide. This can’t be a coincidence. It was presented by M. H. Clark, who was also a Boston physician. Cover is brown with gilt writing. Horn’s is in italics. (Faded rust boards w/torn spin, some warping, water stained pages. See photos.) No map. 78 + 18 pages. Not in Zamorano 80. Number 343a in Kurutz. Found in 14 locations. Not in the best condition, but priced right! A must for any collector or historian of the California Gold Rush.City: County: State: Date:
