Here is an interesting piece. A stock scrip of 1 share to WL Evans. #275. Dateline Houston, April 20, 1871. Signed by president Young and secretary. Names are pen cancelled. Has a 25-cent Certificate revenue stamp. The Houston and Great Northern was chartered on October 22, 1866, by the first Texas legislature to meet after the Civil War. The railroad owned track between Houston and Palestine, between Houston and East Columbia with branches from Phelps to Huntsville, and between Troup and Mineola. In 1873 the Houston and Great Northern and International Railroad Company consolidated to form the International-Great Northern Railroad Company. Charles E. Young died on August 9, 1871, a little over three months after this certificate was dated, from a train derailment accident.
