The Houston and Texas Central Railway was an 872-mile railway system chartered in Texas in 1848, with construction beginning in 1856. The line eventually stretched from Houston northward to Dallas and Denison, Texas. with branches to Austin and Waco. William E. Dodge, president of Houston & Texas Central and notable American businessman. Dodge was one of Wall Street's 'Merchant Princes' before the Civil War, and after the war was known for his advocacy for temperance and Native American rights.
